Dr. Fred Chu brings a long list of credentials to the glaucoma service at Cincinnati Eye Institute. A graduate of Princeton University and Washington University, Dr. Chu specializes in cataract surgery and the diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma. In addition to clinical work, Dr. Chu presents his research and findings at national presentations and conferences—regularly giving back to the field with his education, insights, and expertise.
Dr. Chu is highly valued by patients and colleagues alike. His 5-star ratings on the Cincinnati Eye Institute’s website reflect on his skills as a medical practitioner, as well as his ability to understand and address the needs of his patients.
As an expert on glaucoma, Dr. Chu notes that the most difficult aspect of managing the disease is that, similar to diabetes or high blood pressure, patients do not often have any symptoms early in the disease—often resulting in a late-stage diagnosis. Dr. Chu recommends patients stay vigilant and do their best to keep their annual eye exams on their calendar so doctors can identify early signs of glaucoma and other eye diseases.
Dr. Chu works alongside doctors and providers as part of the glaucoma services team of Cincinnati Eye Institute to offer patients the best treatment plans possible for their conditions.
“We are constantly evaluating the newest technologies to give our patients the highest level of care,” Dr. Chu said. “This involves incorporating new medications and surgical devices to allow us to help successfully manage the wide spectrum of diseases that we treat while minimizing the risk to our patients. As a service, we continue to assist in the development and assessment of new devices and techniques by participating in research studies.”
Dr. Chu has worked at the Cincinnati Eye Institute since completing his fellowship at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is actively involved in the ophthalmology community, including teaching ophthalmology residents at the University of Cincinnati. His contributions to the community and his ability to fully address the needs of the community are part of Dr. Chu’s consistently high ratings, which he attributes to his family values and mentors.
“It is very humbling and gratifying when patients provide positive feedback,” Dr. Chu noted. “I do my best to adhere to the lessons my dad, who was also an ophthalmologist, and my mentors in training have ingrained in me. Being a physician requires understanding and managing a patient’s disease process; but, equally important, it requires identifying and addressing any questions or concerns that a patient may have. Communication is of the utmost importance and allows us to more effectively treat the whole person and not just a disease.”
